Penguin book cover designs

So I really enjoy doing book cover designs and i decided this year to enter the competition for all the books included in Penguin Awards 2015. The results will be out on the 24th of April so we will see if I got anywhere with these.

Penguin Briefs
Book Jacket Design
Photoshop, InDesign

The brief was given by Penguin Brief Competitions  2015. They asked to design a fiction,  a non-fiction and a children’s book. I decided to respond to all briefs given. The titles can be seen clearly on the book covers.

  • Freakonomics - Non-Fiction
The idea behind the cover is the enlightenment of the audience after reading the specific book. It imitates the light that comes out of  a prism whose true  colours appear when passing through the prism. The brief asked for the cover to be vibrant and fresh.

Carrie’s War - Children’s Book
Inspired by 1940s War posters and the grainy feel to it,  the idea behind the book jacket is when Carrie blames herself for doing something she didn’t do. The image clearly shows her holding the cursed skull which was meant to bring disaster if removed out of the house. I chose that scene because it is meant to be one of the most important ones in the book.

Oranges are not the only fruit - Fiction
The book is about religion and the homosexuality of a girl Jeanette who happens to be the author as well. The idea behind the orange peel being the snake ,  is Jeanette’s mom who is trying to oppress heterosexuality on her, daughter, and the apple represents her homosexuality, which happens to be also the forbidden fruit in Christianity. The brief asked to include things such as religion and the content of the book.
